Yellow crates are game objects that can be opened for flares or modern arrows, they were added in update v0.26 of The Forest
Gameplay
Yellow crates are similar to suitcases in that they need to struck to be opened. Aim at the ground with a weapon and strike the crate. Once it is open it will reveal its contents. It appears that the game has set the contents of yellow crates, they will either have flares or modern arrows in them.
