Notes |
Hides inside its shell when attacked. |
Tortoises are passive animals that spawn in specific areas around water, especially in the swamp lands. They move very slowly and will hide inside their shell if you try to attack them. Similar to turtles, the tortoise will drop a turtle shell and two pieces of meat after death. Furthermore, its head can be collected. The tortoise will die from a single hit to its head, but take reasonably longer to kill if hit on the shell. They seem to be Greek tortoises.
Gameplay[]
The largest benefit to the tortoise over the turtle is their commonality. While turtles may only be found along the southern half of the island on the coastline, tortoises can be found across the majority of the island near the river and other bodies of inland water, save for the mountains. This makes them the most reliable source of turtle shells for players who venture inland to build.
Tortoises also spawn in smaller groups than turtles, and move alone instead of in groups, while turtles generally spawn in quantity and move in a somewhat scattered group.
Hunting[]
The best way to kill a tortoise is to throw any spear at it, no matter where on it lands on its body, it will kill it instantly. A modern bow will kill a tortoise instantly if shot in the head, the crafted bow will take two shots. It is much easier to kill a tortoise by aiming for the head, which should kill it in one hit. They will hide in their shells if they are hit and not killed. In this situation it is best to be patient and wait for them to come out again. Attacking their body will kill them eventually, but it will take a significant number of hits and this is much more time consuming than the former method.
- It takes 80 hits with the plane axe to kill this animal and during the killing you will end up covered in blood.
- It takes 80 hits with a simple stick to kill this animal.
- It takes 120 hits with a small rock to kill this animal.
