Crocodiles are hostile animals that were added in update v0.18 to The Forest.

Gameplay[]

Crocodiles can be found scattered around the northern parts of the river that flows through the peninsula, though they will almost never be found in the water. They drop 4 lizard skin and 4 meat if killed, along with their head that can be used for decoration. Crocodiles have one of the rarest spawn rates of all huntable animals.

The player can stand on top of crocodiles, though if the crocodile starts moving, the player will fall off.

If a crocodile enters a body of water in pursuit of a player, the player is in grave danger. Crocodiles can swim much faster than the player. They will keep chasing and attacking, until the player dies or manages to flee.

If a player dies to a crocodile on multiplayer, they can be revived.

Location[]

Crocodiles can be found in the area around the river in the northern half of the peninsula including the so-called Crocodile Hut Village. They can be easy to miss due to their colour and their tendency to lay still on the ground waiting for prey. This makes them dangerous to hunt.

Crocodiles can not be found south of the river.

Hunting[]

Being near a crocodile is enough to make them aggressive to the player.

Crocodiles attack by running towards the player, then thrusting themselves forward a few meters and smashing their strong jaws. Crocodile bite deals 55 points of damage to the player without armor. The bite can also remove 1-3 pieces of armor based on armor worn. Their weakness is their relatively slow speed before charging and their inferior maneuverability. After a crocodile attacks, it takes about 3-4 seconds before it can attack again. This is a good opportunity to attack it. If the player tries to flee, the crocodile will chase them for a good distance at a fast pace. Despite its surprising amount of speed, the player can outrun it, so it is best to flee if it charges.

Often times, crocodiles will behave more skittishly, simply running away when approached, making their behavior somewhat unpredictable. Although, they must turn to attack the player with their mouth, they do so quite fast, so it is recommended to hit them repeatedly and quickly from the tail end to minimize the chance of being bitten.

Crocodiles are quite durable compared to most other animals on the peninsula, taking multiple hits to kill. The amount of hits required varies by difficulty.

There are some easier methods to killing crocodiles:

  • Bait the crocodile into attacking, then backpedal when it goes to strike. This will give you the chance to hit the crocodile 2-3 times. Back away before it attacks and repeat the process which should kill it. This can be done from behind as well.
  • Throw spears at it. Use any spear, as they do the same amount of damage when thrown with the exception of incendiary spears (they do more damage). If you hit it, it will run away. Pick up your spear again and throw it. It should only take 2 throws.
  • Bows are okay, but there's a chance you will lose your arrows.
  • Molotovs work well.
  • Don't use explosives, it will blow animals into pieces.

Trivia[]

Their latin name: "crocodylus niloticus", means Nile crocodile.
